quality run on the out and back course nearly breaking the 20 minute

Mark Edwards with the performance of the day. Mark, running his

m/m), with Paul Robertson not far behind him in 38:38 (6:13 m/m) and

Chester Marathon 31st May
In
its first year of running the Chester Marathon had 1000 runners all
keen to show what they can do on what is a predominately flat
course. Mark Dodd and Matt Whitfield were there from Ellesmere Port
and shown just what quality they both have. The out and back course
comprises starting at Chester Rugby Club, running along the cycle
path to Queensferry, with a short loop, then straight back to the
club. The sun was beating down with a breeze so conditions were
favorable.
Aiming for a club record, Mark suffered the most going through half
way in 1:20:40 and on target, however the heat and sun were starting
to take their toll as was a stomach upset. From then on in, it was
damage limitation and Mark dropped from 11th to 14th position over
all in a time of 2:49:28 (6:27 m/m) a new PB, but some way short of
his target.
Also
suffering slightly in the heat was Matt Whitfield. Hoping to go
under 3:15, Matt paced himself well and after going through a dodgy
spell around 10 mile, got his head together running with a good
group of runners to come home in 3:20:34 (7:39 m/m) and 126th place
overall.
Winning the race was Julian MacDonald of Chester Tri in 2:33:05
(5:50 m/m), 2nd place going to Daniel Westton of Wrexham AC in
2:34:59 (5:55 m/m) and 3rd was James Pearson of Beverly AC in
2:42:46 (6:12 m/m).
The
ladies race was won by Jenni Muston of Charnwood AC in 3:00:44 (6:54
m/m), 2nd place going to Helen Byrne of Holme in 3:14:36 (7:25 m/m)and
3rd place to Catherine Hewitt of Wrexham AC in 3:17:15 (7:33 m/m).
