Bombs away as Roy bounces to superb finish at Dambuster 10 miler
Saturday April 26th 2008 saw the running of the 3rd Derwent Dambuster 10 mile multi terrain race, so named because Derwent Water was the WW II training ground for Bomber Command Squadron 617, aka the Dambusters, prior to the daring raid to destroy dams in the Ruhr Valley using Barnes Wallis’ bouncing bomb, which mission was immortalised in the 1950’s film The Dam Busters.
Making his own daring raid on this race, which is run around the beautiful Upper Derwent Valley, starting and finishing by the Derwent Water Dam wall, was EPRC’s Roy Traynor. Completing the course in an excellent time of 74minutes 2seconds Roy was clearly energised by the historic overtones of this event and fair bounced up the hill to the start of the course, before skipping his way along the undulating side of Derwent Water Reservoir to a turn at 4 miles, known locally as slippery stones, then turning back towards the Dam on the opposite side, again on tracks for about a mile, before skimming along the tarmac roadway and finally exploding over the finish line, where a fantastic spread of home made cakes and drinks awaited the finishers. Excellent views all the way round were confirmd by Roy who was heard to utter “In all my years running I have never done such a scenic race.” Surely one to pencil into the diary for next year.
