Sunday 2nd December Steve Laker made the trip to Preston to take part in Guys 10 mile road race. With heavy rain prior to the start, the prospect of getting a good time seemed remote. However, with the clock ticking down to the start time, the rain reduced in intensity and the forecast strong winds had not materialised.
Therefore, when the gun fired Steve was very optimistic of gaining a personal best. For the first 5miles with the help of a tailwind, great progress was made and a sub 59 min time, seemed a realistic goal. The second half was however a different story, the wind was now head-on and several parts of the course were flooded, the most sever being a 50m stretch, 6 inches deep at 7miles. Needless to say, all thoughts of a PB by nine miles had been washed away. However much to Steve’s surprise he crossed the line in a new fastest time of 59:07 in 13th place, just short of 58 min. Also taking part was local runner Graham Earlam from West Cheshire A C, who completed the course in 1:02:11, and was very unlucky to finish just outside the top 3 in the vet 45 category. With this sort of form and his imminent move to the vet 50 age group, this runner will certainly continue in contention for the prizes for the foreseeable future. The winner was Peter Medupe from Preston Harriers with a time of 52:43. The first lady was Gemma Unsworth from Blackpool Wyre & Fylde running club with a time of 1:05:28.
On Saturday 24 November, Denis Duret took full advantage of an opening in his calendar to take part in European Cross Country trial held over a 9.8k course at Sefton Park, Liverpool, for his second claim club West Cheshire. Denis ran an excellent race to be first home for the team in a time of 38.23 in a very respectable 182 position, in a race that boasts many national runners. The winner was GB runner Peter Riley from Leigh Harriers in a time of 30.18, the 8.1k senior women’s race was won by Hayley Yelling from Windsor Slough & Eton, AC in a time of 27.42.
