As though blessed by the gods, Hollins Green was once again basked
in glorious sunshine and 26C degree conditions for its annual 5k
race. Part of the Cheshire Gran Prix 5k series consisting of 5 road
races, this is the 2nd, taking in a one lap course 90% of which are
glorious country lanes. 245 people took part in the race.
Steve Crowe and Mark Dodd were EPRC representatives. Steve who is
concentrating on 5k's during the summer months ran well, knocking 12
seconds off last year's time to finish 7th in 16:12 (5:14 m/m). In
the hot conditions, this is exceptional running and he seemed
pleased with his performance with a cheeky hint he may be doing
targeting some half marathons later in the year. Mark Dodd who 5
days earlier had completed the Chester Marathon suffered a little
more, however was more than pleased with a 17:53 (5:45 m/m) run.
Winning the race was Damian Nicolls of Wilmslow running club in
15:18, 2nd place going to Gareth Booth of Horwich RMI Harriers in
15:54 and 3rd spot taken by Rob Hughes in 15:56.
The Ladies race was won by Liz Whitfield of Spectrum Striders in
18:32, followed by Vale Royals Kate Spilsbury in 19:08 and 3rd place
going to Nabilah Salihi also of Spectrum in 19:38.

17k Trail Race 5th June
Paul Robertson headed off road to Stavely in the Lake District on
Saturday. A 17km trail race and part of the Lakeland Trail Series.
The run brings to mind Eschers drawings, with the course seemingly
climbing all the way but bizarrely finishing on the same level as it
started. But a great off road race and reminder of why Paul enjoys
running so much.
Starting in Staveley village,
the course along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways
takes in panoramic views of most of the southern Lakeland fells. The
trail climbs out from Staveley above the Kentmere valley, before
returning along the valley itself past idyllic tarns and through
ancient woodland, climbing Reston Scar before the descent back into
Staveley village
It was a hilly course across all types of terrain, but very scenic
and very enjoyable and very hot. Paul's time was 83:17, position
15th overall. Official results are pending.
Capenhurst 10k 6th June
The family Dodd made their collective racing debut for Ellesmere
Port Running club on warm and breezy Sunday morning for the
Capenhurst 10k. Dave Dodd, running only his 2nd race in 15 years,
was looking for a solid performance before his Welsh Castles leg
this weekend. At 63 years old, he may no longer be a spring chicken,
but the rooster certainly put full effort into the race. Mark Dodd,
Dave's son, was also there even though he'd ran a 5k less than 18
hours earlier... with his wife Sharon Dodd also showing that running
runs through their veins. Nicola Bird also made a late appearance
fancying her chances of a win.
With only 64 participants, the lowest ever recorded, probably due to
6 local races in the same week the field wasn't too strong. First
home for the club, was Mark in a time of 36:28 (5:52 m/m) and 2nd
place overall 12 seconds behind the winner Tony Barbet from Wallasey.
With official results still not in, positions are not recorded
however Dave Dodd ran 48:22 (7:47 m/m) and Sharon Dodd 1:06:20
(10:37 m/m). Nicola was 2nd lady in 39 minutes.
