Steve's Column - 07/09/04

Trafford Race sees Steve smash PB.

An early start on Sunday morning saw Ellesmere Port runner Steve Crowe head off to Partington, Manchester for the Trafford 10K. With 260 runners present on the start line the race started fast and the field soon spread out with Steve holding his position from the off. With 5 miles of the race gone Steve was being closed down by veteran top club runner Ken Moss of Northern Vets AC but Steve managed to hold him off and pull away again to finish the race in a time of 35.10 smashing his PB by 45 seconds and claiming 20th position.

On Saturday afternoon Alison Macdonald took part in the 10 mile Llyn Brenig multi terrain race. Following a good 5K race at Capenhurst two weeks ago Alison continued her good form to finish the hilly race in a very respectable 1 hour 13 minutes taking 4th position in the F35 Category.

Friday night saw the last in the series of the Deeside Off-Road races that in run over an approximate distance of 5 miles along paths and fields near to the banks of the River Dee, Shotton.
First runner home for EPRC was Ian Cooper who showed a return to form to finish 5th just behind West Cheshire’s Kenny Begley in a time of 28.11 and this was good enough to give Ian 2nd Place in the Vet 40 category for the overall series.

Next runner home for the club was Steve Crowe who once again finished seconds behind West Cheshire’s Graham Jenkins to claim 8th position overall in a time of 28.40. Matt Whitfield was next runner home finishing in a time of 31.24 just 10 seconds outside his series best, giving Matt 28th position overall.

Matt was followed by John Jennings who in true John style led the race for the opening paces before finally finishing 36th in 32.24. Next runner home for EPRC was Les Fleetwood finishing the race in 52nd position in a time of 35.05. Finishing right behind less was Paul Welsh who took a massive minute and a half of his last outing here finishing 53rd in a personal best time of 35.09

Finally, good luck to Mike Burns who is starting his comeback following a back operation. We believe Mike might be targeting the clubs Christmas handicap as his comeback race.
