Mark's Column - 15/07/07

Capenhurst Club 5k

Chris Marshall was Ellesmere Port Runners sole representative in the near by Capenhurst Running Club 5k race. After 3 runners broke away early, Chris tucked in a small group of 6 runners. At the 2.5k mark, Chris headed the 2nd group and pushed on the pace. Just getting out sprinted by a West Cheshire runner, Chris finished a magnificent 5th place in a new PB of 17:49.

Sale Sizzler 5k Race 2 of 4

Once again, Mark Dodd ventured to Manchester for the second race of four in the Sale Sizzler 5k. On the back of a hard week of training, Mark still managed 32nd place in a time of 17:29 seconds, 10 seconds slower than his previous outing.

On a warm sunny Saturday afternoon, Ellesmere Ports hardcore drove the 30 minute journey to Warrington for the 3rd running of their small but perfectly formed 5 mile race. Two laps of an undulating course in warm conditions weren’t going to pose any threats on PB’s but there were some excellent performances with the races biggest ever field of 120 runners.

Winning the race was the inform Sale Harriers runner, Mike Hatch in 27:01. First home for Ellesmere Port was Mark Dodd with his 2nd race in 48 hours, coming home in 28:56 for 8th position. However, not that far behind Mark was where the real action was taking place. Paul Robertson with a last minute decision to race was up against it with the “race machine” Chris Marshall on his tail over the last 400 metres. In one of the classic sprint finishes of recent times, Paul 15th place just held Chris 16th off for a time of 30:05 with Chris following in 30:06. However, Chris consoled himself with TWO beef burgers so finished the day with a smile on his face… and ketchup.

Further down the field and feeling the hills was Matt Whitfield. Smiling all the way to the finish insight of his free post race beef burger Matt put a spurt in for 31:44 and 28th position.

This was enough for Ellesmere Port Males team to clinch their second team prize of the year just ahead of Spectrum Harriers by a single point.

Only one lady from the club ran, and that lady was Alison Hughes. Now taken over the mantel as No.1 female EPRC runner due to Nicola Birds restricted duties, Alison didn’t disappoint. Running 34:47 for 56th position overall, Alison struggled a little in the heat, but still ran a great time and finished 5th senior lady.
