Over in Whitley, Steve Crowe and Dave Nalder were racing the hilly
challenge of this popular 10k race. Also included this year in the
annual Cheshire Road Race championships consisting of 7 races over
differing courses. The course which is tough and undulating isn't
the quickest, but this didn't stop the many time winner Daniel
Cliffe of Warrington AC winning the race in 31:59 (5:08 m/m). 2nd
place went to Damien Nicolls from Wilmslow in 33:04 ( 5:19 m/m) and
3rd was Lawrence Walker from Warrington in 33:49 (5:26 m/m). Our
very own Steve Crowe ran strongly coming home in 5th place overall
(4th senior male) in 34:07 (5:29 m/m).
The ladies race was won by Sarah Ridehalgh from Accrington in 37:57
(6:06 m/m) with 2nd going to Liz Whitfield from Spectrum Striders in
38:00 (6:07 m/m) and 3rd to Leanne Sheehy in 38:09 (6:08 m/m).
Five runners made the short trip over the Leastowe lighthouse for
the start of this years seaside run series consisting of a 3 mile
race along the shoreline promenade. Official results still aren't
confirmed, however Graham Ealham (1st V50) was first home for the
club in 17:50, followed by Nicky Bird (1st lady)18:22, Jon Cole
18:45, Mathew Whitfield 19:22 and Alison Cole 19:45.
Mark Dodd, Matt Whitfield and Jason Bennett travelled south to this
increasingly popular and incredibly tough 20 mile road race. In very
warm conditions of 21C and one of the toughest 20 milers around with
over 1400 metres of ascent, Ellesmere Port were well represented.
Mark was first to arrive home. With only 2 weeks of recovery from
his Blackpool Marathon, Mark worked hard taking the lead at 1.5
miles and keeping there until 7 miles. Being passed by 7 runners at
this point nearly finished him off, however Mark dug in, picked a
few runners off and finished in 4th place overall (3rd senior male)
in 2:12:54 (6:38 m/m).
Matt Whitfield and Jason Bennett decided to run the race together
and were good to their word coming home in joint 32nd position and
2:36:03 (7:48 m/m).
Winning the race in 2:03:38 (6:10 m/m) was Martin Swenson from Penny
Lane Striders, with Peter Mallison 2nd in 2:10:10 (6:30 m/m) with
3rd place 2:12:02 (6:36) going to Ian Stainthorpe.
Jon and Alison Cole travelled to nearby Wrexham to run there superb
and fast 10 mile road race. With stunning warm conditions it was
going to be tough, but both runners put 100% effort into their
racing. Alison was first lady home in 1:08 with John blowing up in
the heat for a 1:11:45. Overall results are to be confirmed.
Amanda Penfold, Simon Jeffs and Jon Hawker ran this years marathon.
In perfect conditions, if a little wetter than recent years a superb
result for two of our runners with the third dropping out due to
injury.
Simon Jeffs who was targeting 2:50 had to drop off at 20 mile due to
an ITB knee injury that's been plaguing him for the previous few
weeks. He was on for 2:52 when he dropped out. However, better news
for Amanda and Jon. Jon was next home in 3:46:48 (8:39 m/m) in
7458th position missing out on a PB by just 9 seconds with Amanda
not far behind in 3:51:25 (8:49 m/m) and 8488th place.
Winning the race was Tsegaye Kebede from Ethiopia in
2:05:19 (4:46 m/m) and the ladies was won by Liliya Shobukhova from
Russia in 2:22:00 (5:25 m/m)
