One Ellesmere Port runner made five separate trips to Horwich, Lancashire last week to participate in the Horwich Countryside tour.
Paul Welsh started on Tuesday with a Trail Race (4mls) onto the hillside above Rivington, a fast course with a climb for the first half, Wednesday saw Paul tackle a 4 mile road race on an undulating course around the reservoirs at Rivington in hot & sunny weather. Thursday night's race was the "Walsh Two Lads Fell Race" 900' / 5.25 mile challenging course with a fast descent back into Horwich. Friday was a 4-lap cross country race in Ridgmont park, basically very dry, grassy undulating and fast course. Paul took it easy for the first two races not knowing any of the race routes, time wise he was happy with the Fell race but a bit disappointed on the position however Paul wrapped the week up in style with a fabulous PB on the final race of the week the carnival town centre 5K on Sunday breaking 20 minutes for the first time after positing 19.54.
Steve Crowe was also in Horwich on Sunday for the staging of the English AAA and North of England 5K Championships.
The race brought together some of the top male and female athletes in the Country with 25 runners posting a time of under 15 minutes. The race was run by Wilfred Taragon of Birchfield Harriers in 13.54 with Mark Miles of Belgrave Harriers second in 13.58. Steve finished the race back in 71 st position but still ran close to his personal best in a time of 16.47.
